Narcissus- Selfish and Sexy
Was a hunter from the territory of Thespiae. He was infamous for his striking good looks. He was the son of a river god named Cephissus and a nymph named Liriope. He was very proud of his ability to please his lovers. According to Ovid's Metamorphoses (Book III), Narcissus' mother received warning from the blind seer Tiresias that he would live a long life only if he never saw his own face. He lived many years never knowing what he looked like, but when he angered the gods, he doomed himself. His rejection of nymph Echo's love or (in an earlier version) the young man Ameinias, brought down the wrath of the gods against him. Nemesis, the nymph who brought forth retribution to mortals who gave into hubris led Narcissus to a pool. There he saw his reflection for the first time and fell in love with his reflection in the water. He was unable to leave his reflection and wasted away admiring himself, the blossoms that bear his name sprang up around where he passed away. He is the origin of the word narcissism. The story may have derived from the superstitions of Ancient Greeks believing it was unlucky and even fatal to see one's reflection.
Echoing- Follows After Death
A beautiful young mountain nymph who was a bit of an overbearing chatterbox who fell in love with Narcissus. Before she met him, she was a nymph with a glorious singing voice envied by Aphrodite herself. However, Hera cursed her after learning that Echo kept her busy with conversation, keeping her from spying on one of Zeus' lovers. Hera cursed her to only be able to repeat what she has heard spoken first. This story is given in Metamorphoses Book III.
Also in Metamorphoses, Echo develops an unrequited love for the handsome Narcissus. She followed him from a far, calling to him and echoing his cries of confusion to her identity. He demanded her to show herself and she did. He then banished her from him, condemning her to be too ugly for a beauty such as he. She was unable to get over this loss and wasted away. Her body wasted away and only her voice remained where it would continue behind Narcissus forever, echoing whatever he would say. Another tale of Echo’s is that she wishes to Aphrodite to aid her in winning over the heart of her beloved Narcissus, and Aphrodite changes her into being merely a voice who can be heard by all and follow Narcissus as she wishes without needing to show herself.
